The picture book "The Frauenkirche at Dresden. Development, Impact, Rebuilding"
The Stiftung Frauenkirche produced the book ‘The Frauenkirche at Dresden – Development, Impact, Rebuilding’ in October 2005 to mark the consecration of the church.
The first part is dedicated to the building activities in the 18th century. The book throws light on the planning history of the baroque new building by means of its historical construction drawings, and gives an insight into building practices in the second quarter of the 18th century. The biggest stone dome north of the Alps is considered as the epitome of a Lutheran preaching church. One chapter is dedicated to the life of its constructor George Bähr; another to its artistic decoration and iconography; and yet another to the impact of the Frauenkirche in the ecclesiastical life and public consciousness since the 18th century.
The story of its rebuilding is the theme of the second part. The role of the citizen’s initiative and the individual phases of the rebuilding under present day conditions are described. The architectural and technical details regarding the reconstruction of the dome and the restoration of the inside of the church are knowledgeably described. The richly illustrated book reveals the impressive performance which the rebuilding of the Frauenkirche at Dresden represents. The volume and others are available in the Visitor Centre and in the Meeting Point Gallery.
