The Sound of the Frauenkirche

Music has always played an important role in the Frauenkirche. It is an essential component in the message conveyed during church services; sacred music is also performed on many occasions in the church’s baroque setting.

The musical groupings of the Frauenkirche – its Choir, Chamber Choir and the Frauenkirche Ensemble – all make an invaluable contribution to the richness and excellence of the church’s musical life.  The musicians under the direction of cantor Matthias Grünert are thus playing their part in the continuation of a great musical tradition.

The Frauenkirche Musical Ensembles

In 2005, the year of the consecration of the Frauenkirche, the newly appointed cantor Matthias Grünert formed two choirs and an instrumental ensemble with the aim of creating a versatile musical potential and at the same time giving the Frauenkirche a sound uniquely its own.
