Gestures and symbols

On a visit to the church, symbols and stories await discovery. They tell the tale of people who fight for peace, and of places from which the message of reconciliation is spread.

The new church cross tells the story of its very personal connection to the English smith who made it, and his inter-generational reconciliation. A plaque honours Hugo Hahn. First the superintendent of the Lutheran Church of Saxony and later the Bishop of Saxony, he stood up against the proclamation of National Socialist thoughts in the Frauenkirche. The Gostyn urn of fire stands on one of the stair towers as a sign of international reconciliation. Today, the wounds of the war and destruction are healed, but the scars they left behind can still be seen, as a reminder and a warning.

The words in the Frauenkirche’s prayer books and stories from all over the world illustrate everyday, personal experiences of reconciliation. The Frauenkirche undertakes the task of collecting and preserving these stories.
