Bells

The Frauenkirche belfry is home to eight bells that give the church its own, unique voice. In accordance with an old tradition, each bell has a name, a bible verse dedicated to it and an individual embellishment that links into the Frauenkirche’s church service remit, on the one hand, and into its history and importance, on the other.

One of the bells in the current chime, Maria, rang out in the services of the former Dresden Frauenkirche between 1734 and 1925. 1998 marked its return to Dresden to complete the chime in its function as a memorial bell. The seven other bells had to be recast – the thanksgiving bell Hanna, the baptism bell Philippus, the prayer bell David, the wedding bell Josua, the city bell Jeremia, the proclamation bell Johannes and the peace bell Jesaja.

Attended by a gathering of more than 100,000 people, the bells were brought to Schlossplatz by a procession. On 4th May 2003, the seven new bells were consecrated by the Bishop of Saxony Kreß and the full chime of bells placed in the services of the Frauenkirche. Whit Sunday 2003 marked the first occasion on which the bells rang out from their belfry in their full glory.
