Baptisms in the Frauenkirche
In the Frauenkirche, both children and adults can be accepted into the Christian community through baptism.
Pre-Conditions
Both children and adults can be baptised. Whilst adults undertake the step on their own responsibility, for children the legal guardians decide, normally the parents. In this regard, at least one parent has to be a member of the Protestant church. For the christening of a child, two to six godparents may be nominated. Membership in a Christian church is a pre-requisite for the role of a godparent. Half the godparents must be Protestant. Baptism of an adult requires attendance of a baptism preparation course.
Appointments
Baptisms in the Frauenkirche are celebrated once a month in an independent baptismal service. (normally on Sundays at 3 p.m.). In addition, baptisms are held during one morning service per month. Baptisms of adults takes place in a special service on the evening before Easter Sunday, after the candidates have attended a baptism preparation course.
Allocation of Appointments
Please contact the parish office in writing stating your preferred dates. The ministers and their co-workers will check to see whether your wishes can be met. If a baptism is possible you will receive a written appointment suggestion. After this has been confirmed by you and the necessary documents have been presented, you will receive an appointment confirmation from the parish office. At this point, the appointment will be committed.
Appointment Periods
The allocation of appointments takes place a half year in advance. From 1 January of a given year, you can request an appointment for the second half of that year; and from 1 July of a given year, you can request an appointment for the first half of the following year. For example, from 1 January 2007 until 30 June 2007, you can request an appointment anytime in the period 31 July 2007 till 31 December 2007.
Documentation
As part of the preparation for the christening of a child, it is mandatory that the parents make contact with the church community to which they belong. That is normally their local community. There, they express the wish to have the child christened in the Frauenkirche and not in the responsible local community. If the local community agrees to this wish, then a so-called Dimissoriale (formal permission) is issued. In addition, the christening notice (registered with the local community) and a copy of the child’s birth certificate are necessary. The godparents must have godparent certification, which is issued by their local community and proves that they are eligible to be godparents.
Costs
There are no charges for christenings.
