Weddings
Couples can marry in the Frauenkirche. (You can find information for couples who are celebrating their wedding anniversary here.)
Pre-Conditions
A marriage in the Frauenkirche is a religious activity in a Protestant church. Hence a precondition for a marriage is being a member of the church community. There is the possibility, by arrangement, of an ecumenical marriage service for couples who belong to different denominations. Couples can celebrate a church service after their wedding where only one party is a member of the Protestant church. However in every case, the church wedding must be preceded by the civil ceremony and agreement of the responsible parish office must have been obtained.
Appointments
Marriages in the Frauenkirche take place exclusively on Saturdays. Normally on two Saturdays per month, appointments at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. are set aside for marriages. Allocation takes place through the parish office of the Frauenkirche.
Allocation of Appointments
Please approach the parish office in writing stating your preferred dates. The ministers and their co-workers will check to see whether your wishes can be met. If a marriage is possible, you will receive a written appointment suggestion. After this has been confirmed by you and the necessary documents have been presented, you will receive an appointment confirmation from the parish office. At this point, it will be a committed appointment.
Appointment Periods
The allocation of appointments takes place a year in advance. From 1 January of a given year, you can request an appointment for the first half of the following year; and from 1 July of a given year, you can request an appointment for the second half of the following year. For example, from 1 January 2007 until 30 June 2007, you can request an appointment anytime in the period from 1 January 2008 until 30 June 2008.
Records to be submitted
As part of the preparation for the marriage, it is mandatory that the marriage partners make contact with the church community to which they belong. That is normally their local community. There, they express the wish to get married in the Frauenkirche and not in the responsible local community. If the local community agrees to this wish, then a so-called Dimissoriale (formal permission) and a record of the banns are issued. These documents are the basis for an appointment confirmation on behalf of the parish office. In addition, it is necessary that a copy of the civil marriage certificate be presented by the day of the church wedding at the latest.
Costs
A charge will be levied for the use of the Frauenkirche facilities: organists and church servants, flower decoration, preparation of the order of service programme, light and sound technology. Further details can be obtained from the parish office.
