Niklas Jahn

Niklas Jahn took up the position of organist at the Frauenkirche Dresden in December 2024. The church musician, concert organist and conductor pursues his passion for sharing his love of music with his fellow human beings through meaningful and energetic concerts in a variety of ways.

His busy international concert schedule has already taken him to Japan, England, France, Holland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Italy and Switzerland. It is always important to him to focus on the special and unpredictable in his programmes: The art of improvisation gives his concerts a special touch. He skilfully masters the balancing act between improvisation in all historical styles and improvisation in free form and style.

Niklas Jahn was fascinated by music from an early age. While still at school, he began early studies at the University of Music in Mainz with Prof Hans-Jürgen Kaiser. From 2016 to 2021, he completed his Bachelor's degree in Church Music there, including in the organ classes of Prof Gerhard Gnann and Prof Hans-Jürgen Kaiser as well as in the conducting classes of Prof Ralf Otto and Prof Wolfram Koloseus. He then continued his studies at the University of Music in Freiburg. There he studied choral conducting with Prof. Frank Markowitsch, master organ improvisation with Prof. David Franke and obtained a master's degree in church music with Prof. Matthias Maierhofer, Prof. Vincent Dubois and Prof. David Franke. He was then the first student at the university to study the two concert exams in organ improvisation and artistic organ playing.

Niklas Jahn himself held a teaching position at the Saar University of Music in Saarbrücken for organ literature performance and improvisation and continues to teach at the University of Music in Freiburg as a substitute professor for organ improvisation and as a lecturer for organ literature performance and improvisation at the University of Music in Weimar.

Niklas Jahn has received numerous prizes for his outstanding achievements, including first prize at the St Albans International Organ Competition and first prize at the Musashino-Tokyo International Organ Competition. He achieved further successes at the organ improvisation competition in Haarlem and the organ competition in Korschenbroich, among others. He received the cultural sponsorship prize from the Rotary Club Mainz and the prize from the ‘Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Hochschule für Musik Freiburg’. He is also a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation and the Helene Rosenberg Foundation.
