2025: A Year Full of Bach's Music
The Frauenkirche Honours
Johann Sebastian Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach is often regarded as the musical godfather of the Frauenkirche Dresden. He once performed on the grand Silbermann organ in the original church. To commemorate the 275th anniversary of his death in 2025, the Frauenkirche will present a series of concerts showcasing the remarkable range of his Baroque masterpieces.
Bach’s vast body of work is a timeless gift, bridging the human with the divine. His music embodies unparalleled harmony and structural perfection, while also expressing a profound emotional depth. Whether in the simple, transcendent beauty of his chorales or the majestic power of his oratorios, Bach’s compositions speak directly to the heart.
The Frauenkirche Dresden Foundation feels both compelled and honoured to preserve and celebrate the legacy of this great Baroque master. Throughout 2025, Bach’s cantatas, motets, masses, passions, oratorios, and organ works will resonate under the church's iconic dome, performed by the Frauenkirche's resident orchestra and distinguished guest artists from around the world.
Bach and the Frauenkirche
The Frauenkirche Dresden is a historically significant venue in Bach’s life. He once performed on the renowned Silbermann organ in the previous church structure. The original steps he climbed to reach the organ loft are still preserved, and they continue to inspire organists who ascend to the modern-day organ of the restored Frauenkirche. This deep connection makes Bach the Frauenkirche’s spiritual and musical godfather.
In 2025, the 275th anniversary of Bach’s death will be marked by performances of his three monumental oratorios – the St. John Passion, Mass in B Minor, and Christmas Oratorio. Additionally, the program will offer audiences the opportunity to experience Bach’s music from a variety of perspectives, allowing for fresh discoveries of his extraordinary sound world.
Join us at the Frauenkirche Dresden, and rediscover the genius of Johann Sebastian Bach.

As a place of worship, the Frauenkirche also cultivates Bach in the musical organisation of church services and devotions. Whether excerpts from motets and oratorios or popular arias from famous cantatas and instrumental sonatas – the full variety comes to the fore during the course of the church year.
